Veterans Day at Washingtonville Cemetery: "God So Quickly"
By Eugenia Moskowitz

About 60 people walked the grounds of Washingtonville’s All Faiths Cemetery for the Veterans Day Ceremony and Grave Rededication on November 11,organized by the Blooming Grove United Church of Christ and the First Presbyterian Church of Washingtonville. While Veteran’s Day events have been held sporadically over the years at the cemetery, together the two churches hope to make this an annual event.

The 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry Company B posted colors, followed by Rev. Lise Worthington of the Blooming Grove United Church of Christ (colloquially known as the “Veteran’s Church”) who spoke on the theme of "God So Quickly" from a quote by Tennessee Williams. Other speakers included Jonathan Matsler, a Washingtonville High School JROTC member and Eagle Scout; Darold Londo with Post 1573 Harriman and West Point graduate Class of 1986; and Cary Abbott, Ret. Marine Corps Master Sergeant and founding member of AMVETS Post 2015 in Blooming Grove.

Washingtonville Village Historian Linda Standish then led the grave rededications, starting at the historical Soldiers’ Monument and continuing to all 12 graves, where Boy Scouts placed flags marked with the names of the veterans being honored: Richard Goldsmith (Revolutionary War), Walter Halsey (War of 1812), Isaac Nicoll and John Greene (Civil War), Irving D. Jones (Spanish-American War), Chadwick Gerow and Rozwell Greene (World War I), Mott P. Greene and Alden Jones Jr. (World War II), Evelyn Decker (Korean War), David Louis Steeves (Vietnam War) and Brandon Monroe (Persian Gulf War).
